2010 Commonwealth Games Delhi, Visitor Guide

Well, The last edition of 2010 Commonwealth Games visitor guide was about how to stay safe and healthy, well this week it’s all about what to see, where to go and what to do! Besides the terrifying traffic jams, over crowded streets filled with all kinds of farm animals (cows, buffalo, dogs, donkeys and occasional monkeys too), Delhi is a city flooded with historic as well as modern attractions. No matter what, I can assure that you will just love this exotic and spicy city, yeah I love to call Delhi ‘The Spicy City’. You wanna know why, well, you have to come here and experience that for yourself.

Talking about what to see, there are myriads of attractions to visit and you can literally visit specific attractions according to your mood. I know, it sounds a bit exaggerating but seriously there is an attraction for every mood. Before we jump to the attraction part, I would strongly recommend travelers to visit all these attractions only and only during weekdays because weekends are a nightmare.

Here is a list of some of my favorite attractions:

(I have included the entrance fees in Indian Rupees; you can convert to your currency here: Click Here)

Red Fort: A 17th century fort complex built by Emperor Shah Jahan, no visit to Delhi is complete without a visit to the red ford. The fort is open daily from around 9 am to around 5:00 pm. The entrance fee for foreigners is Rs 250 rupees. Photography is free but for video cameras you have to pay 25 rupees extra. The queue at the ticket counter is hell; fortunately there is a separate ticket counter only for foreigners.

Jama Masjid: A must see for all, you will amaze at the sheer beauty of this enchanting religious site. Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the same dude who built the Taj Mahal, Jama Masjid is the largest Mosque in India. The mosque is open from 7 AM to sunset, but visitors are not allowed inside between 12:15 and 1:45 PM. Please do not take any pictures during the prayer hours.

Read More about Jama Masjid Here

Jantar Mantar: Truly an ancient marvel, Jantar Mantar is located just a stone throw away from Connaught place or simply CP, the heart of Delhi. Built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur, Jantar Mantar consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments which were used to compile astronomical tables, and to predict the times and movements of the sun, moon and planets. Jantar Mantar is open all day (Monday to Sunday) from sunrise to sunset; there is a small fee of Rupees 100 for foreigners.

(P.s: On my last visit, this place was full of hookers and couples making out; let’s hope that the Delhi Government will do something to clean up)

Read More about Jantar Mantar Here:

Akshardham: Akshardham is the largest Hindu temple in the world and the best part is Akshardham is just a moment away from the 2010 Commonwealth Games village. Whether you visit all the temples or just mediated in the garden, you will just love it. There is also a small gift shop that is worth checking out. Akshardham is free for all and the site opens everyday except Mondays from 9 AM to 6 pm.

Read more about Akshardham here

Lotus Temple: Truly a treat to the eyes, Bahá'í House of Worship or just Lotus Temple serves as the Mother Temple of the Indian subcontinent. An amazing place to just sit back, relax and mediate, Lotus Temple is one of the few places in Delhi where you can enjoy serine peace yet without escaping the crowd. The temple is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Read more about The Lotus Temple here

India Gate: Undeniably the most iconic and the most popular attraction in Delhi, India Gate is a historic landmark plus a popular picnic spot. Built to commemorate the 90,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who lost their lives while fighting for the British Indian Empire during the World War I, today the site is known as the site of the Indian Army's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The site is free to all and it’s open from sunrise to late night. The best time to visit India Gate is after sunset when the entire surrounding area transform to a mega picnic spot where families enjoy chill out, relax, couples making out. That is not all, the site is also filled with people selling everything from light snacks, ice creams and soda to neon toys and much more, which actually is quite a sight.

Read more about the India Gate Here
Qutub Minar: This is one of my favorite attractions and am pretty sure, you too will love it. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Qutab Minar is the world's tallest brick minaret, standing 72.5 meters. Qutab Minar was built during the 1190's by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim ruler in India. In this site, you will find the Iron Pillar, considered as one of the world's foremost metallurgical curiosities and according to legend if you can encircle the entire column with you arms, with you back towards the pillar, any wish of yours will come true. Unfortunately you can’t do that today as the government has built a fence around it. Qutub Minar is open daily from sunrise to sunset and the entrance fee is Rupees 250 for foreigners.

Well these are some of my favorite attractions in Delhi. Besides there are also tons of other attractions such as the Humayun's Tomb, Raj Ghat, the National Museum, St. James' Church and Purana Quila. Check out this site for more information on Delhi attractions:

On The Way To My Work Place!

Updates: Heff's Bar and Grill just dedicated me with a video.. Check it out here: CLICK ME

Damn Traffic! I was late just by four freaking hours. Not a great way to start a Monday. Thank God, I was not the only one who was stuck, even my boss was stuck there. At least, I don't have to convince him that it really was the traffic because he is a tough guy to convince. In a way, am so excited that I just have four hours more to go before i pack my bags and head back home. Am secretly praying that this happens at-least twice in a work. Here are some pics that I took on my way to my office.

The Delhi-Gurgaon Toll Gate: The second largest in Asia. This place becomes a nightmare after 7:00 Pm

A Local Ice Cream cart, these are very cheap and so good. They carry around ten different flavors, plus Ice cream type drinks.

Looks like a small Shop, right! Well you will astonish at the variety of stuffs you can get from here. Cigarettes, Match Box, Lighter, Candies, Chewing Cum, Tea, Coffee, bread toast, Omelette, Pan Masla etc..etc..

Totally Messed up Alley

Another sight which makes me fell like am going on a Safari tour everyday. I travel from streets that resemble like small rivers, bumpy roads and pure dirt roads.

Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games Visitors Travel Tips

Source

2010 Commonwealth Games is just round the corner! Is Delhi ready for this mega sporting event? Delhi has undergone massive changes, some for better and some for worse! Construction of flyovers, new Metro lines and the increase in the size of the road are some really good stuff but increase in the price of beer from Rs. 45 a bottle to Rs. 65 is completely insane! Yeah everyone is saying that the increase of price in beer is because of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Anyway, what is done is done, today am not going to rant about anyone instead I’ll write something useful. Something useful for everyone visiting Delhi to be a part of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, sort of a travel tip.

For today’s post, I’ll cover some basic Delhi travel tip on how to stay safe, what to do and what not to do all based on personal experiences and observations:

For women

For women, dress conservatively, though Delhi is crowed with posh malls, high rise buildings and high end cars but the mentality of the locals is still very low. If you don’t want to deal with unwanted attention dressing conservatively is the best and the only option. Don’t travel alone especially after dark. Delhi is one of the most unsafe cities in India for women. It’s not a rare case in Delhi where some guys in motorbikes will approaches a girl asking for directions and then touching her privates and fleeing the scene or in the public bus or in a crowded market where the dude behind you might rub his dong on your back or flying hands just to touch you. If you face such situations, don’t hesitate to raise your voice. People around you will surely help you, there is a 99% chances that you will find a police man nearby. Smiling is good but here in Delhi, think twice before you smile at a guy unless you know that person. You may be just being friendly but the chances are very high that he might take your smile as a sign of you interested in him. For any problem, dial 100.

Transportation

City buses and metro (underground railways) are the cheapest means to travel around the city while the later is the fastest and one of the best means to get around. Auto or also known as tuk tuk in other part of Asia is another cheap and convenient means. Though Delhi government has set a rule for auto drivers to charge passengers only by meter but it’s almost impossible that you will find an auto drive willing to charge you by meter. Always negotiate the fare before boarding the vehicle. But if you are willing to avoid all these hustle and bustle call one of the radio cabs. Easy Cab (contact: 01143434343), Quick Cab (01145333333) and the newly launched ForShe Cabs, especially for the ladies driven by lady chauffeurs (contact: 011 45628200) are some of the best and you will find their rates as equal to Auto rickshaws.

Food and Water:

There is a joke about Indian Cuisine that Indian foods are so spicy that it does not only burn your stomach but also toilet papers and this is the main reason why Indians don’t use toilet paper. Delhiites have a passion for eating out, finding a place to dine is not a problem but finding the right place to dine might be. A great site to find restaurants in Delhi is http://www.restaurantsindelhi.com/. Drinking tap water is a big no. Stick to bottle waters. Delhi streets is full of street hawkers, selling almost everything including bottled waters and buying a bottle of water from is just as same as buying tap water. No matter what, always buy your water from a store. One can also find drinking water taps installed in almost every bus stands, railway stations, markets and commercial areas and these tap waters are safe to drink as these waters are well treated and inspected regularly by the Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Well, I hope these tips will help you. In case if you face any kind of problem while you are in Delhi, Dial 100. If you need any insider advice or tips on Delhi, feel free to ask through the comment section, I’ll try my best to provide with accurate answers.

That’s all for today! Next post will be on Delhi attractions, shopping, dining and nightlife.

Random Pictures of My Weekend!

How was your weekend? Mine was chaotic, sweaty yet fun. Normally my weekends start at 3 in the afternoon, I try my best to sleep as late as I can. Lunch at the nearby budget friendly Indian-Chinese fusion Restaurant near Delhi University South Campus (Cost me around $3), visit the Wine store to buy my weekend stock of 'Baron Beer' and vodka. Jam with the bands, crash our favorite watering holes (Cafe Morrison, named after his holiness 'Jim Morrison' or one of the shabby and cheap road side bars on the Highway to Jaipur). Visit some of the lady friends and get wasted! The same thing rotates on Sunday except getting wasted because I have to go to work on Monday!

I know, I suck big time at photography but who gives a damn... Here are some random pics I took this weekend.

Vodafone, hell yeah.. Vodafone one of the cheapest Mobile network provider here in India...

A Street Hawkers selling . They have Playboy too hidden beneath business magazines.

Another Hawker playing with his mobile phones. Mobile Phones are freaking Cheap here in India. Mobile phones start from somewhere around $21. Mobile Phones are so cheap that you can even see beggar with one.

A Street Hawker selling Inflated Balloons.

Bina Music Store: One of the few Music Stores Where you can actually get almost Musical instruments you need.

Paul Stanley From Kiss...... Every time I see that Poster, I want to steal it!

OverDrive Records: One of Delhi's best jam pads/ studio. The guys who run this place are even cooler. This is one of the few Jam Pads in Delhi where you are allowed to smoke, booze, dope or even do crazy stuffs. If you have a metal band in Delhi, this is the place you want to jam!

Inside OverDrive Records, this is the Jam Room!

Just another Chaotic sight of Delhi Traffic. Thank god there is no Cows here!

A very rare sight of Delhi. Its almost impossible to see free flowing Traffic here in Delhi especially at this time of the year.

Penelope Cruz and Preity Zinta Manic Friday!

Breathless, exhausted and dripping wet with sweat but who cares! I don’t care even if am thousands mile away from home! I don’t give a damn even if I have to spend the night in a boring hotel room! Nothing matters to me right now. I have just played a sold out stadium gig infront of thirty thousand metal heads, with our first album hitting the number 1 spot in just 30 countries, with Wacken Open Air requesting us to Headline, its really doesn’t matter whether am tired, I have to spend the night in a hotel room alone. Seriously It Doesn’t matter. After all this is my first week being a real Rock Star with almost a million dollar in my account.

Thank god our tour manager did finally manage to book a decent place to spend the night. Last time he booked our stay in the Hiltons and it was a bit shabby, but I have heard good things about Taj Palace Hotel’s Grand Presidential Suites. Though the feeling of being a star is awesome but star too get tired. After our successful stadium show, we head to our Grand Presidential Suites and man this place is sweet. Let me skip the boring stuff…..
After a quick shower I head down to the hotel bar and guess who was there! Penelope Cruz and Preity Zinta! Yes Penelope Cruz and Preity Zinta in the VIP section of the bar sipping Louis Roederer's Cristal Champagne and the best part was they were waving at me, inviting me to join them. Man its good to be rich and famous.

After emptying two bottles of Louis Roederer's Cristal Champagne and a bottle of Neuf-du-pâpe, things started to heat up. One thing led to another and before we knew it, we were in my super luxurious room shredding our clothes and I never knew how amazing Victoria Secrets lingerie’s are until now. Just as they said ‘Honey Come on, Let’s Make Some Noise’, My Freaking Alarm Goes Off. Can you believe it, my alarm goes off and I have only half an hour to get ready for my work. Well its just another Manic Friday!

P.s: Waiting for the day when I can afford to stay in the Taj Palace Hotel. The pictures of the hotel in their website is so seducing, have a look here

Delhi! Not So Amazing Right Now!

Bumper to Bumper Traffic Jam. Flooded streets. Smelly sewage flowing freely. Dead cars, trucks and buses in the middle of the road. This is what you will see right now New Delhi. The long awaited Monsoon is here and with it came the 3 miles long traffic jams, dead traffic lights and the smell as an incentive. Just one day before it all began, the Delhi Municipal Corporation declared in the news with full pride that this year Delhi is ready to face the Monsoon, come what may. Well just thirty minutes of rain flooded the streets of some of the busiest streets here in Delhi.

Am glad that the temperature has climbed down and I can sleep peacefully without an AC but the price that I have to pay for this is way too high. Since the first day of Monsoon, am reaching office atleast two hours late and my ride back to home after 9 bloody working hours take around 4 hours, though it take only 30 minutes. I don’t have any problem, reach office late, but reaching home four hours late is something I can’t take. I just want to say something to the Delhi Municipal Corporation, ‘WHAT THE FUCK’!!!!!

Enough of the weather report!

I think people here in Delhi are really enjoying my Metal Photo Tuesday because I got some emails from other Indian bloggers asking me to add their picture. Well I can’t do that because that will kill the spirit of my Metal Photo Tuesday, the spirit of grabbing a complete stranger and convincing that person to pose for me with the horn up. That is priceless.
Let me just stop my useless rambling here. Am stuck in a massive traffic jam and am praying that I’ll reach my office just one hour before my shift ends. Am such a dedicated employee!

P.s: Last night I was looking for Heavy Metal blogs in India and when I typed the phrase ‘Indian Metal Blogger’, Mine came in the first. Weird! Isn’t!

Metal Photo Tuesday - 3

It’s Tuesday and it’s time for ‘Metal Photo Tuesday’. As I have said before, Metal Photo Tuesday is an amazing way to meet new people; though the task of convincing complete strangers to pose for me with the horns up is not easy. Am doing as an awareness program to spread the good news about Heavy Metal and am hopping that when they see an Indian metal band performing at least they would understand what’s going on.

Today’s subject is a Spanish Fan that I meet in a bar in Connaught Place, New Delhi right after the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Unlike past subjects, he was a tough one to convince. Though it cost me a pint of beer but it was worth it! Speaking of World Cup, Spain did an amazing job but I just could not support them after the Spain Germany Match.

Live While You Are Alive

Monday's, i just hate Monday! Well who doesn't! Here is something that never fails to inspire me when ever am down, beaten and crushed and when ever I feel my life is not fair. Hope this will inspire you too!

Get Dirty. Get Filthy. Get Poor. Get Off Your Ass. Get Desperate. Get Dangerous. Get Vilified. Get Vile. Get Romantic. Get Fucked. Get Moving. Get Pro-Active. Get Stoned. Get Your Own Life. Get Lose in a Foreign City. Get Doing Something, Anything.

Because before you know it you will be 40 with kids and a mortgage. So before children, before mortgage, before 60 working hour per week, before your back and knee problems, before school loan, before you lose your sense of Humor, Live Your Life.

Fight and fuck and run and smile. Smile because the older you get, the less you will. Quit being such a pussy because bitching, whining and worries never make anything better.

Life is not about finding yourself, it is about creating yourself. When people tell you, 'you can't', turn around and say 'Watch Me'. Don’t Sacrifice the present for the future, life is available only in the present. If you wait too long for the perfect moment, the perfect moment will pass you by. Live Life While You Are Alive

Metal Photo Tuesday

I Love Tuesday, because I just have to go to work another three days. I Love Tuesday because Tuesday is the day when I post my Metal Photo Tuesday. Having this theme Tuesday is really amazing because I get to met lots of people who are totally ignorant about the Heavy Metal Music Genre, here in the land of Bollywood, a ripped off of Hollywood where the most stupid movies are produced.

Today's subject is someone I met at the mall. I was shocked when she told me that she love the song 'In Bloom' by Nirvana.

Political Parties! I Love Em Now

Am not one of those guys who is into politics, government policies and stuffs like that. I find them quite boring. Political parties to me it's just a bunch of guys who have lots of money and time, looking for new venture to spread their greed infested wisdom and to earn more money. But today i want to say thanks.. from the bottom of my heart. But thanks to only the political parties in India who organized the ban. If there wont be a ban, I would have been in work trying to just stay alive. The best part, you guys have decided to hold the protest on a Monday morning.... Thank You.

I know that your demands are not going to be fulfilled as its almost an impossible demand and the Government of India would never reduce the price of Petrol. But at least we got a day off from work.
