A Mini-vacation In Haridwar part 3

This is my last post of my Mini-vacation in the Land of the gods and goddess, Rishikesh and Haridwar.

Am not much of a religious guy and visiting religious sites does not interest me even the slightest and if you are like me you should not give more than half a day to explore Haridwar. If you are visiting Rishikesh, Haridwar is unavoidable, especially if you are traveling by train. Honestly the only thing that excited me in Haridwar was Har ki Pauri and to watch the evening Aarti. The Evening Aarti is a soul touching scene where devotees float earthen diyas (lamps) in the River Ganga but I missed it because I lost my patience to wait.

Though I missed the most important spectacle of Haridwar but I did managed to shoot some really amazing pictures of Har ki Pauri.

My Travel Guide on Rishikesh and Haridwar

  • If you are coming from Delhi, forget the bus its too tiring. Take a train. A train ride from Delhi to Haridwar is around 5 hours and the ticket cost around 450 to 500 Rupees. From Haridwar you can take a Vikram which will take another 20 minutes to Rishikesh and cost around 30 to 40 Rupees.
  • Unless you are planning to stay in an ashram to learn yoga and meditation, three days is enough to see Haridwar and Rishikesh. Spend two days in Rishikesh, One day for hiking in the nearby area and another day for rafting in Rishikesh. Give it a day to explore Haridwar's many temples and of course the Evening Aarti in Har ki Pauri.
  • Most hotels in Rishikesh are located near Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula. If you want something different, Tapovan has some really good resorts and cottages with view of the River Ganga. Camping in Rishikesh is also another fun experience.
  • I did not bother to do any advance research on hotels in Haridwar. In Haridwar, you will find tons of hotels just outside Haridwar Railway Station. I stayed in a place called Hotel Sachin International and it was quite good. The hotel was clean, comfortable and very reasonably priced.
